Dublin is widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s loveliest and liveliest capital cities. Established as a Viking settlement on the River Liffey over 1,000 years ago, it gradually became an important commercial and cultural centre. Today the city is bustling, with a population of over 1.7 million including many recent immigrants from all over the world. Despite its cosmopolitan feel, Dublin retains a strong and distinct cultural identity expressed in a love of literature, drama, and traditional music. The city has a world-famous literary pedigree, producing more than its share of prominent writers. The national treasures of Ireland are concentrated in the museums and galleries of Dublin. The National Museum of Archeology, the Writer’s Museum, The Hugh Lane Gallery, The National Gallery, The Chester Beatty Library and the Old Library at Trinity College which houses the magnificent medieval masterpiece, the Book of Kells, are all located within a few minute’s walk from one another in the city centre.
