Book Review: Where the Crawdads Sing

by the Education Team

How much do you trade to defeat loneliness? – p. 163

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens was a book that inspired passionate conversation when the Education Team decided to take an hour one Sunday to meet and discuss this interesting selection. Centered on the main character Kya, a virtual orphan who raised herself in the marshes of North Carolina, the conversation evoked diametrically opposed viewpoints. Was it formulaic or original? Did education build a fortress around Kya or did it give her a pathway out? Were Kya’s choices/actions a product of nature (her own and the natural, evolutionary environment around her) or lack of nurture? Was she a sociopath or a victim? Were women the heroes or the villains? Were men the heroes or the villains? Although we may have disagreed about the answers to the aforementioned questions, we all agreed that this was a book that deals with the nuances of life. We invite you to read this book and draw your own conclusions!
