Education Crisis for Girls in Afghanistan

Although parts of this video/article are already outdated, Afghanistan Education Crisis Under the Taliban: Ensuring Access for Woman and Girls from The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security offers recommendations from experts to the international community to help in the fight to keep Afghani girls in school. Here is a summary, but for more details on actionable steps, please click on the article above.

  • Coordinate and condition engagement with the Taliban on their providing education to women and girls, including publicly releasing new policies on girls’ education.
  • Monitor and hold the Taliban accountable for implementation of educational reforms with clear benchmarks.
  • Match commitments to girls’ education with robust financing, ensuring that the education sector is prioritized in international donor packages.
  • Finance and train Afghan women teachers, especially at the village and local levels, to address the critical teacher shortage.
  • Support and scale Afghan women-led alternative educational models, including technology and online learning systems, to reach a wider range of girls.
  • Enable girls’ economic empowerment through holistic and skills-based education.
  • Collaborate with religious and community leaders to break down harmful gendernorms that restrict girls’ education.
  • Leverage the influence of Muslim-majority countries to model positive examples of women’s education, leadership, and agency in an Islamic framework.
  • Meaningfully include Afghan women leaders in the development of education assistance policy and implementation.

Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies

“This report captures the state of girls’ education in crisis and conflict and presents a range of case studies to illustrate the social and cultural norms that exist as barriers. It identifies the specific areas where girls are continuing to fall behind and outlines the gaps in data and funding. The report also recognizes the significant progress to date and proposes recommendations for stakeholders and advocates.”

Educational Implications for Displaced Ukranian Students

“Education is critical for children caught up in humanitarian emergencies. To help them continue learning, obviously. But also because it gives them a sense of normality and a safe space to be with other young people.” 30 Days to Help Ukraine’s Refugee Children is the feature article in a recent TheirWorld bulletin.
