- From Theirworld:
What were you doing 12 years ago this week? It probably seems like a lifetime away.
That’s when the conflict in Syria began. While Ukraine continues to grab headlines, the Syrian civil war – like Yemen and many other long-running crises – rumbles on almost unnoticed by the outside world. The statistics for Syrian children are mind-numbing – 2.4 million out of school in Syria and more than 6 million living as refugees in nearby countries. The trauma of having their young lives turned upside down is unimaginable.
Education offers the hope of a normal life. It’s the key to a brighter future. But too often the odds are stacked against displaced children and youth. That’s why Theirworld is working with Mosaik Education in Lebanon to help Syrian refugees progress from high school to higher education. It’s the latest in a series of innovative projects and ground-breaking reports by Theirworld that have been supporting Syrian refugees since 2013.
- Continuing with the “education for refugee children” theme, read about how Theirworld is partnering with businesses to support Ukranian children as they seek education while still in crisis.
- Don’t be fooled by glowing reports on public education in the US. While many teachers and students continue to thrive, attacks on access to textbooks and literature having to do with the LGBTQIA+ community, racial issues and even the history of slavery are real and spreading. Read a rundown of how author Jodi Picoult is clapping back in Florida, even while Governor DeSantis threatens access to Advanced Placement coursework. North Carolina has similar movements concerning critical race theory and limits on school curricula.
