The Education Team Connects with the Target Project

by Hollie Nielsen, AWC Central Scotland

The Education Team is very excited to support Target Project 5, Awesome Blossoms. There are many overlaps between Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes quality education for all, and this environmental Target Project. Over the course of the next year, the Education Team will support the Target Project with articles on subjects such as literacy and general education in Kenya, education in the informal settlements in Nairobi, the importance of good nutrition to learning, and environmental education at the partner schools.

ed team This month, our focus is on Continuing Education, which fits quite well with one aspect of Awesome Blossoms: the training of women to be micro-entrepreneurs. These women will be educated to promote sustainable agriculture in Mathare, an informal settlement in Nairobi; we hope to update you with the progress of their continuing education as they learn vocational skills. The women will then pass their knowledge on to another group of micro entrepreneurs – “Each one, Teach one,” as Awesome Blossoms founder Peninah Nthenya says.

In the recent Brookings Institute presentation, Rethinking Education for a Climate-Resilient Future, Temilade Salami (Director and Founder of EcoChampions) said, “Schools are community hubs that can promote environmentally sustainable practices and draw community members into climate and environmental initiatives. We must harness one of the most powerful forces of change that exists – quality education for all.”

Join us over the next year as we explore the educational goals of SDG4 and connections to environmental initiatives such as Awesome Blossoms.
