March 8 is International Women’s Day. UN Women announced this year’s theme as ‟Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.”

In the midst of the global pandemic, women have disproportionately suffered from increased domestic violence as a result of being locked down in their homes around the world. The statistic that the most dangerous place for a woman is in her own home has borne out during this past year.

This focus on women and girls calls out for them to be participants and shapers of our future, starting today, so that in a post-pandemic world they will experience more equality. Further, this aligns with the theme of the 2021 Commisson on the Status of Women (CSW65) which will be held virtually for the first time in its history. The priority theme for CSW65 is “Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls."
