Relationships with others are important. Sometimes we don’t value those community relationships until we really need a larger circle of caring humans. In early 2023, many of us are dusting off our social skills as we begin venturing outside “beyond Zoom” to renew relationships and create a few new ones.
In the spirit of positivity, we want to promote healthy relationships for all: friendships, intimate partnerships, family members both nuclear and extended, colleagues and companions. Here are 5 of the 10 signs of a healthy relationship as defined by One Love, a non-profit with the goal of ending relationship abuse:
- Comfortable Pace – the relationship moves at a speed that feels enjoyable for each person.
- Fun – you enjoy spending time together and bring out the best in each other.
- Equality – the relationship feels balanced, and everyone puts the same effort into the success of the relationship.
- Healthy Conflict – openly and respectfully discussing issues and confronting disagreements non-judgmentally.
- Honesty – you can be truthful and candid without fearing how the other person will respond.
Visit www.JoinOneLove.org for the complete list of Healthy Relationship signs as well as signs of an unhealthy relationship. There are also 30-second videos and other resources on the site. A TED talk on this topic of healthy/unhealthy relationships given by Katie Hood, CEO of One Love is here.
Human rights can be daunting because there are so many violations in today’s world: locally, nationally and internationally. We are often reading about human rights abuses. And yet, there are also many individuals and organizations (such as OneLove) that are actively speaking up regarding basic human rights. Their focus is on educating others and acting on behalf of upholding the dignity of each human person.
As a member of FAWCO or just as a member of the human race, you are able to participate in raising our collective voice on human rights in your own neighborhoods. FAWCO provides an opportunity to join with others from many countries who are doing the same in their sphere of influence.
