Ways You Can Support UN Activities

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT UN ACTIVITIES


1. Support FAWCO’s Malaria Project: Our commitment to eradicating malaria will continue and we urge you to focus on this issue by awareness-raising or supporting projects for malaria prevention. You can donate money to FAWCO’s on-going efforts to help alleviate the problem of malaria in conjunction with BioVision. See http://ngo.fawco.org/malaria

2. Join Billion Tree Campaign: The Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, continues her crusade to revitalize the environment by planting billions of trees in cooperation with the UNEP Plant for the Planet campaign. For more information go to www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign and to donate go to www.fawcofoundation.org.

3. Support the effort to get CEDAW approved by the US government: CEDAW is the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women that has been signed by 185 countries; however, the US has not yet signed it. See how you can help lobby for its ratification at www.womenstreaty.org

4. Volunteer your time to the UN: You can actually use your skills to help the UN online. Check out how to do this at www.onlinevolunteering.org

5. Join a local UN Association: Check out www.wfuna.org, which is the World Federation of UN Associations for information about how to join a group in your country.

6. Support children’s rights by encouraging the US to sign the CRC : (Convention on the Rights of the Child). For more information on this see. www.unhchr.ch and sign up for a regular newsletter on what is happening around the world regarding children’s rights at www.crin.org/.

7. Host a Trick or Treat for Halloween Party:  UNICEF USA would be happy to provide you with the classic little orange boxes for your children to take trick or treating. What a wonderful way for children to learn to give to others. For more information on how to participate next Halloween, contact www.unicefusa.org


8. Help to alleviate violence against women: Contact UNIFEM which sponsors a special trust fund that is tax-deductible for US taxpayers, or contact your local shelter for abused women and children. For details, contact  www.unifem.org

9. Celebrate a special UN day and hold a teach-in on a UN- related issue: For example, your club could help spread awareness about violence against women on Nov. 25, or discuss women’s health issues on April 7, which is World Health Day. 10. Donate to UNICEF: The principle UN agency concerned with assisting needy women and children in developing countries. Here are just a couple of ways to donate:

  • Earn American Airline Advantage miles. For every $1 donated, earn 2 AAA miles.  See www.unicef.org/aa
  • Donate part or all of proceeds from E-bay sales to UNICEF. For details go to  http://pages.ebay.com/givingworks/fag.html
  • Send unused foreign currency to-- US Fund for Change, ATTN: Change for Good Program 29 W. 38 th Street 11 floor, NY, NY 10018
  • Want wedding guests to donate money to UNICEF? UNICEF can supply special wedding favors. For information, call 212 922 2570.
  • Send a special e-card or paper card for someone’s birthday or special occasion. For more information contact
  • Buy Christmas cards and other items from their online gift shop. See  www.unicefusa.org

11. Click for a better world: You just need click on the following sites and you are contributing to the cause. It only takes a flick of the wrist and you are helping people. Note- all of these sites are linked together so it is very easy to do.  It’s free and you can do it daily!
