UN NGO Representative
FAWCO is regularly invited to NGO events sponsored by the Department of Information (DPI) and ECOSOC. As a recognized NGO, FAWCO also gets invitations to attend UN conferences and outside symposiums that occur throughout the year in various locations around the world. FAWCO is also a member of several NGO committees like the CSW (Committee on the Status of Women) in both
In general, a FAWCO representative could be called upon to attend any meeting where NGO’s are admitted and where there is significant interest in the specific topics for FAWCO members. These topics could include, but are not limited to, the following issues:
- Education, literacy, special learning difficulties
- Human rights, particularly for women and children
- The environment
- Micro-financing
- Health issues such as malaria, maternal care, cancer, HIV/AIDS
Specific Role Entails
- Attending regular meetings, conferences or events held at UN offices.
- Issuing written reports on the meetings, conferences or events attended.
- Writing articles or researching information about UN or UN-related issues for the FAWCO website and/ or FAWCO publications.
- Working with the other members of the NGO Team on updating the website.
- Promoting FAWCO’s R & R’s through UN and other NGO projects.
Ideal Attributes
- Keenly interested in the UN and UN issues.
- Politically astute and up- to- date on international affairs.
- Knowledgeable about FAWCO and its R & R’s.
- Enjoys working with people of other nationalities.
- Good at researching, summarizing and writing meetings notes.
- Good at networking.
- Willing to devote significant time and energy to NGO issues.
- Not pushing any one political or social agenda.
- Available to attend meetings on short notice.
Time Commitment
The hours required varies from month to month depending upon UN meeting schedules. Most key meetings are between mid- Sept and mid-June. Attendance at monthly UN or NGO meetings depends on location.Appointment to the position is for one year and renewal is dependent upon level of performance during the previous year.

Written Reports are Expected
At any of the official meetings , the FAWCO representative is normally the eyes and ears for FAWCO. The representative will be expected to listen to the presentations and make a short summary of the meeting that may be published online or published in one of FAWCO’s publications.
Limits to Speaking in FAWCO’s Name
Because of the sensitivity of the subject matters involved, representatives are asked to not speak out on FAWCO’s behalf on the issue involved unless specific permission has been granted by the NGO Director and/or the FAWCO Board. This means that the representative must always check with the NGO Director and Board before making any public statements or signing any petitions or letters in FAWCO’s name.
