FAWCO is regularly invited to NGO events sponsored by the Department of Information (DPI) and ECOSOC. In general, a FAWCO representative could be called upon to attend any meeting where NGO’s are admitted and where there is significant interest in the specific topics  for FAWCO members. These topics could include, but are not limited to, the following issues:

  • Education, literacy, special learning difficulties
  • Human rights, particularly for women and children

The hours required varies from month to month depending upon UN meeting schedules. Most key meetings are between mid- Sept and mid-June. Attendance at monthly UN  or NGO meetings depends on location.

Appointment to the position is for one year and renewal is dependent upon level of performance during the previous year.

Important Considerations

Location

All UN NGO Representatives must either live in, or very close to, a  key UN Office( NY, Geneva, or Vienna). Consideration  might be given to those who visit one of those locations on a regular basis and who are able to pay their own travel expenses.

Written Reports are Expected

At any of the official meetings , the FAWCO representative is normally the eyes and ears for FAWCO.  The representative will be expected to listen to the presentations and make a short summary of the meeting that may be published online or published in one of FAWCO’s publications.

Limits to Speaking in FAWCO’s Name

Because of the sensitivity of the subject matters involved, representatives are asked to not speak out on FAWCO’s behalf on the issue involved unless specific permission has been granted by the NGO Director and/or the FAWCO Board.  This means that the representative must always check with the NGO Director and Board before making any public statements or signing any petitions or letters in FAWCO’s name.
