Since 2005, FAWCO has been partnering with the Swiss Foundation BioVision in support of their integrated approach to malaria prevention in pilot projects in Africa. FAWCO's partnership with BioVision has been enthusiastically supported by member organizations and individuals and as a result, many children will now live to see their 5th birthday - who only 4 years ago did not stand a chance.
Since the original focus was on the purchase of insecticide treated bed nets (ITNs and LLITNs), the initiative was called NetWorks. This initiative has been recognized and applauded in the NGO community, the UN and in particular by the World Health Organization (WHO), which published information about FAWCO and NetWorks in a publication highlighting the work of NGOs.
FAWCO, the FAWCO Foundation and our member organizations can be very proud of their significant contribution to malaria eradication. As of March 2009, the grand total raised is $165,885. We should also not forget FAWCO's equally valuable contribution to education and awareness-raising on the issue of malaria eradication and prevention.
The break down of funds donated for malaria prevention (World Swim and BioVision) is as follows:
2006 $97,000.
2007 $52,500.
2008 $15,330.
2009 $1055.
In addition, FAWCO nominated our partner organization BioVision for the 2008 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Award, for which they were recognized with a substantial grant of $100,000.
This is the first time that all of FAWCO has joined together on a global issue of this kind with organizational support of a Millennium Development Goal and we can certainly claim great success.
