The First Session of the Open-ended Working Group on strengthening the protection of the human rights of older persons was held in April 2011. The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has published an article that discusses the outcomes of this meeting. The article states: "The world’s population aged 60 or older is expected to double by 2050, to a record of 21 per cent – representing two billion people. Member States are expressing concerns about the status of older persons revolving around their social and economic situation, their participation in development and their relationship to human rights."
