Secretary General Comments at CSW Opening Ceremony

Right off, Secretary General Antonio Guterres faces the truth head on, saying that the issue of gender equality is a question of power. We live in a male dominated world, and many social problems are rooted in the damaging legacy of centuries of patriarchy. Women are taking action, and we need to listen to them, and lift them up.

The UN has a responsibility to leaad and set an example for the world. We have reached gender parity in the senior management group for the first time, with 21 women and 21 men in the top leadership positions of the UN system. We have zero tolerance for sexual harassment and are setting up systems to monitor and enforce this policy. I am committed to creating a culture in the UN to ensure an end to discrimination and violence against women.

All men should support women’s rights and gender equality. I consider myself a proud feminist. I am committed to doing my part.

Women’s abilities are infinte and possibilities are limitless.

Well deserved loud applause as the Secretary General departs to attend a critical meeting at the Security Council.  WE are grateful for his commitment, for his proud feminism.
