Most FAWCO members still use their passports as identification for boarding aircraft. Many also use driver's licenses or state-issued IDs once they are in the US to avoid having to carry their passports.
The requirement for REAL ID usage has been postponed until May 2023, but many state Motor Vehicle Adminstrations (MVAs) are already requiring that REAL ID requirements be met for renewals/new licenses/state IDs. Because state-issued IDs/driver's licenses will be valid in May 2023, many states are making it mandatory that the documentation requirements be met when currently applying. While this may not be true in all jurisdictions, it is best to double check with your state MVA.
While it generally is easy to prove US citizenship with a passport or birth certificate, and utility bills for proof of residence, proof of one's social security number can prove more difficult, unless of course, you have an originial card, or are working for a US employer who will provide a W-2 or pay stub with the name and complete social security number. An alternative proof is a Form 1099, but many do not print out the entire social security number, only the last four digits. If you are not working, the original (or in my case a replacement card) is what will be required when applying for a REAL ID.
Most MVAs still have limited office hours and require appointments for all business. Be sure to check your state's MVA website to make sure that you have the correct (and original) documents for your appointment. (Note: Some states are still issuing non-REAL IDs, but they will not be valid for boarding aircraft or other REAL ID activities once May 2023 arrives. Passports will continue to be recognized as a REAL ID document.)
