16 Days Campaign Takes on New Form
The theme for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, November 25-December 10, was recently released: “End Gender-Based Violence in the World of Work.” With the recent #MeToo Movement, the conflict over allegations against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and the increased focus on sexual harassment and sexual assault in the workplace, the theme is timely.
Because of the complexity and importance of this topic and its relevance to all of us, the Team will focus the entire year between the 2018 and the 2019 16 Days Campaigns on raising awareness of the problem of workplace harassment and violence, but also trying to get to the root of gender-based violence and seeking remedies. This sustained focus through the various annual activities the Team supports will allow for groups and individuals to plan their participation more easily, since you won't be limited to a specific timeframe.
While the Team will provide other related resources and suggestions over the year, the centerpiece will be our recommendation that individuals and groups view two compelling films by The Representation Project (during the 16 Days if possible) and share them in particular with young people in their lives. Miss Representation addresses the message girls and women receive that their value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in their capacity as leaders. The Mask You Live In focuses on how boys learn that their success is tied to dominance, power, and aggression. Check out details on requirements for viewing the film. And during the 16 Days, watch for posts on the FAWCO Facebook page for additional resources related to this topic.
