4 Easy Steps to 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

Four Easy Steps for the Non-Activist to Participate in FAWCO’S 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

(written by Mary Stange, edited by Karen Castellon, contributions from Tonya Teichert and Rhonda Staudt)

What is the “16 Days of Activism” campaign?

It's a 16-day international campaign, from November 25 to December 10, to challenge violence against women and girls. During the 16 Days of Activism, people around the world unite to raise awareness about eliminating gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women for good. Begins: November 25 – International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

Ends: December 10 – International Human Rights Day

What can you do?

STEP ONE: CHOOSE A THEME (and a color!)

  • The official UN theme for 2019 is “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!”. Your theme does not have to be the same; it only has to have a basis in ending gender-based violence, e.g.:
  • Workplace violence
  • Post-war gender-based violence
  • LGBTQ issues
  • Use a campaign color for your materials! Common colors used are ORANGE or a combination of PURPLE and GOLD.

STEP TWO: CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY

  • Do it when you can! You can do it during the 16-day period, or any other time that works for you.
  • Virtual Activity: Use the FAWCO 16 Days Toolkit to share on social media or in your club newsletter.
  • Physical Activity: Plan a physical activity (a movie, a book discussion, a walk) with your club.

STEP THREE: JOIN THE VIRTUAL READING OF THE DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

  • Join FAWCO on December 10 to wrap up the 16 Days campaign with a live reading of the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Volunteer to read a portion of the document in the language of your home country! (optional)
  • Host members of your club in a central location and join us for a Google Hangouts call. This is a celebration of human rights, fidelity and our founding principle that we are stronger together than we are alone.

Eastern Hemisphere: 0800 GMT (13:30 IST - Mumbai)
